Poosalaar Naayanaar:

story of one of the 63 Naayanmaars of Lord Shiva

Long ago in Thiruninravur, a humble Brahmin named Pusalar Nayanar lived with unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva. Though poor in wealth, his heart overflowed with spiritual richness. He longed to build a grand temple for his beloved Lord — one that would stand as a beacon of faith.

Unable to gather funds or materials, he decided to construct the temple within his heart. Every day, he visualized its foundation, walls, sanctum, and tower. He imagined the Shiva Lingam shining at the center, surrounded by lamps glowing with divine light.

When the temple was complete in his meditation, he fixed an auspicious day for its consecration.

At that same time, King Rajasimha Pallava was preparing to consecrate his magnificent stone temple in Kanchipuram. But the night before, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream, saying:

“I must first attend the consecration of the temple built by my devotee Pusalar in Thiruninravur.”

The king awoke in awe, realizing that the Lord valued inner devotion over outer grandeur. He traveled to meet Pusalar and bowed before him, witnessing the radiance of a saint whose heart was the true abode of Shiva.

The lamp of the heart:
In divine vision, Lord Shiva blessed Pusalar, declaring that the temple within his heart was more sacred than any structure of stone. The light of the lamps he had imagined burned eternally — symbolizing the flame of pure devotion.

Today, the temple at Thiruninravur is known as Hridayaleeswarar Temple, meaning “Lord of the Heart.”

✨ Moral Essence

  • True devotion lies not in wealth or architecture but in sincerity.
  • Inner worship transcends physical boundaries.
  • Divine recognition comes to those who serve with love, not pride.
